We hear a lot about "generosity" and "goodwill toward all men" this time of year, and that's great. But you DEMONSTRATED it with the first SHUTDOWN STARVATION project in October.
We are so HONORED that, while you could have held back because of all the craziness going on around the world, you saw a real need and RESPONDED FAST!
You really are amazing. Are you ready to rise to the challenge again??
Of Kenya's 46 provinces, 20 are in famine conditions, so their government can only watch helplessly as HALF THE NATION starves. They have no welfare system or social services. They have been at the mercy of charities and non-government organizations (NGOs) for many years.
COVID-19 changed the world, not only for you and me, but for every relief project in the world. You can't gather people in large groups, so the regular food distributions were cancelled and people were forced to stay in their homes. Many organizations working in the African bush have had to slow down or shut down their operations. As a result, children are starving in their homes, not knowing if food will ever come again.
On a recent visit, someone told Jonathan, "We thought we had been left to starve to death in our homes with nobody to hear our cry." But how do we feed so many people without large distribution gatherings?
Jonathan Otto and his team are going beyond what other organizations are willing to do. They are literally going house-to-house, bringing relief to individual families, so people can begin building a life beyond the next meal:
We must feed them to keep them alive, but the goal is to give them the ability to be independent.
Watermelons can be sold in the market for $3 USD and they grow in poor soil conditions. We met a woman who put her son through university on the money she made from growing and selling watermelons. But watermelons also have little nutritional value, so we bring sweet potatoes and other nutrient-dense, drought-resistant vegetables to provide critical nourishment.
Going door-to-door, it takes a month to reach everyone instead of a day, but we are committed to drive forward and do the work. We are following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to protect the most vulnerable, as we should. These people are worth the extra effort.
It's easy to write them off because you and I will never meet them, but they have names. They have families that love them. They have stories of hardship and suffering, wondering who will die next.
What they DON'T have is a dream of a better life. When your every waking thought is about trying to keep yourself and your loved ones alive, there is no room to dream.
You can give them the freedom to dream again.
Yes, we want to "shut down starvation" everywhere. But the title has another meaning.
These people are being starved and left for dead by their government and other NGOs because of the global pandemic SHUTDOWN. So we SHUT DOWN this SHUTDOWN STARVATION.
Listen to the passion in Jonathan's voice in the original project video. He felt the weight of the need.
With the first Shutdown Starvation project, you helped rescue a HUGE group of people who were losing hope fast. You were literally a superhero to them. Now, let's go back and serve some more people.
Your donation of any amount is a SIMPLE way to have a HUGE IMPACT on a whole nation. Kenya is dying and we can save 100,000 people with little more than a CLICK.
We've ran the numbers on the cost of a machete, a shovel, a 45kg bag of maize, a bunch of sweet potato stems, and so on, and we figured out approximately how many people each gift would serve:
We BLEW THROUGH that first goal of $75,000 in a few weeks' time, so we know we can do it again, maybe even before the end of the year.
Think we can do it? I KNOW we can.
Just like the first project, your gift is being MATCHED INSTANTLY.
Not everyone can give a massive gift, but everyone can do something. A typical fast food meal costs about $10, so if you were to redirect that amount to this cause, you will not only catch a human before they are lost to starvation, your gut will thank you and you will have more energy.
Share this Shutdown Starvation 2.0 link with a friend now and encourage them to match your gift. You'll turn your $100 into $200 (without taking any more out of your own wallet) and we'll double that.
It's time to turn Kenya around. Want to be a part of it?
Let's GO!
December is a time of celebrating all over the world, but for the people of Kenya
who have been forgotten by everyone, this gift will mean THAT MUCH MORE!
You just helped Shut Down Starvation. You truly are a hero.
